Artist Statement and Biography

Charmain Hearder (that’s me) graduated from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney in 2004 with a Bachelor of Applied Art (Ceramics). My practice started with wheel thrown tableware, finding inspiration from the intimacy that a well made mug requires, as well as the meditational nature of production throwing. My foray into sculptural figures, variously depicting aspects of social awkwardness and oddly surreal moments that occur being amongst people that occasionally happens, seem to have found a resonance with others, which is nice.

I grew up in Brisbane, but didn’t find clay until art school in Sydney, where (alas) it chose me. I eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Art (Ceramics) in 2004.  Following a move to Adelaide to be an Associate at the JamFactory, my practice spans functional ceramic objects with occasional, and ever increasing bouts of sculpture.
